HEBREW BEGINNERS’ COURSE UNITS LEVEL 1, 2 or 3 – Free places on offer!

 
The Jewish Representative Council, in conjunction with the Centre for Jewish Studies, is offering 3 FREE places for their
HEBREW BEGINNERS‘ COURSE UNITS LEVEL 1, 2 or 3 
 
The normal cost of the course for audit only (i.e. not for University credits) is £550, but you can get a free place by applying to the Jewish Representative Council. Just complete the course unit registration form, also downloadable at: www.manchesterjewishstudies.org/storage/nukjsp/mod-heb-registration-form.doc , and return it to office@jewishmanchester.org by the deadline of 12pm on Thursday 24th August, along with a statement of no more than 400 words as to why you should have a free place.

  • Level 1 (MEST 10210) assumes no knowledge of Hebrew and will start by teaching the alphabet; some previous knowledge of the language (knowing the alphabet and being able to read a little) is acceptable.
  • Level 2 (MEST 20210) is a post-beginners’ level language course which builds on the language and skills acquired in Beginners’ Hebrew course.
  • Level 3 (MEST 30210) is an intermediate level language course. The courses will be taught in a mixed teaching environment for classroom-based students alongside distance-learning students.

Course units will run for 11 weeks in Semester 1 (18 Sept 2017 – 28 Jan 2018) with a Winter break (no classes) and 11 weeks in Semester 2 (29 Jan – 8 June 2018) with an Easter break. For further information about the three course units, visit: www.manchesterjewishstudies.org/modern-hebrew/ 

On each level there are 3 classes per week. They will run on the following days: 

  • Level 1 Course (Beginners): Tuesdays 11-1pm, Thursdays 1-2pm 
  • Level 2 Course: Tuesdays 2-3pm and Thursdays 2-4pm 
  • Level 3 Course: Wednesdays 9-11am and Thursdays 5-6pm

The Level 1 = beginner’s level Hebrew course assumes no knowledge of Hebrew and will start by teaching the alphabet. Some previous knowledge of the language (knowing the alphabet and being able to read a little) is acceptable. The course teaches the following skills:
1. Reception (reading and listening)
2. Production (speaking and writing)
3. Translation and interpretation 
 
The aim of the course is:
• To familiarise the students with the spoken and written forms of Hebrew. 
• To familiarise the students with the basic structure of Hebrew grammar 
• To enable the students to begin to express themselves in writing
• To enable the students to engage in simple dialogues
