Press Statement for Immediate Release

JRC-JLC.                                 04-09-18

Salford City Council represented by Deputy City Mayor, Cllr. John Merry, Cllr. John Ferguson and Cllr. Mike Pevitt met with The Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester and The Jewish Leadership Council.  The meeting was called to discuss previous comments made by Cllr. Pevitt.  It was noted that Cllr. Pevitt has already made a full, frank and sincere apology for his comments.  Upon realising his error of judgment, the offending post was instantaneously removed from his social media page.  In addition, Cllr. Pevitt resigned as a whip and referred himself to the regional Party for disciplinary action.

Jacky Buchsbaum – Chair of the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester states:-

“I have fully accepted Cllr. Pevitt’s apology on behalf of the community and wish to draw a line under the matter.  I noted with interest Mike’s longstanding engagement with several Jewish communal organisations.  I would also like to place on record my gratitude to everyone at Salford Labour for the swift and decisive manner in which this matter has been dealt with.  Moving forward, I will be looking to build upon the excellent relationship enjoyed between the Jewish community and Salford Council.

Councillor John Merry, Deputy City Mayor at Salford City Council, said :  “At Salford City Council we have always had excellent relations with the Jewish community, which is strong and vibrant in the city. We’ll continue to work with all communities to tackle hate – as there is no place for it in Salford.”End
