–         CONFERENCE PAPER: DAVID SHNEER: “HER CRY BECAME THE WORLD’S CRY: DMITRII BALTERMANT’S GRIEF AND THE UNIVERSALIZATION OF THE HOLOCAUST THROUGH SOVIET PHOTOGRAPHY”

David Shneer will open the conference by discussing Dmitri Baltermant, a Soviet photographer, who was one of the first to visually document the Holocaust. As the Nazis retreated, the Soviets were the first to uncover mass graves, then later various death camps. This paper explores what and how Baltermants photographed, and their publication in Soviet journals such as Ogonek. In particular, it explores how Jewish grief became a universal grief.

CONFERENCE: “JEWS AND MODERN VISUAL CULTURE”

8-10th September

Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), in partnership with MJM, will be staging an international conference, entitled ‘Jews & Modern Visual Culture’. The conference will explore the relationship between Jews, Jewishness and how Jews are imagined, in various forms of cultural production. From film, television and photography, to comic-book art, antisemitic caricature, the conference will explore how Jews have portrayed themselves in the modern era, and how others have used modern culture to imagine Jews in Europe and the United States (detailed list of talks can be found at http://www.manchesterjewishmuseum.com/whats-on)

MICHAEL BERKOWITZ: “HELMUT AND WALTER GERNSHEIM: THE FINE ARTS AND PHOTOGRAPHY, A JEWISH HISTORY”.

Tuesday 10th September

Helmut Gernsheim was a photographer, historian and, in particular, a collector of photographs. His brother, Walter, was an art historian. Together they contributed to new approaches to photography as an art form. Michael considers the Jewish aspects of their work and, in particular, considers photography in its broader aspects as a Jewish profession and artwork.
