It has been pointed out that we do not make the community aware of the work that we the Jewish Representative Council have undertaken on behalf of the Community:_
The following is a sample of the Jewish Representative Council’s work over the last 2 years:
* Organising the community tehillim following the Manchester Arena attack, attended by over 400 Jews from all sectors of the community at the Holy Law Synagogue with the Chief Rabbi, local Rabbonim and dignitaries
* Running successful Seminars in partnership with the JLC and Board of Deputies for Councillors from across the North West with sessions on antisemitism, Israel, social care and education
* Running community hustings for General Elections and the EU Referendum
* Publishing, with the Jewish Leadership Council, ‘A Jewish Community Manifesto for Greater Manchester’ calling on government to honour ten pledges to the community
* Creating and organising JAFFA – the Jewish Arts Festival For All – the first such festival across our community
* Helping organise two Big Neighbourhood Bash events with partners in Tesco Cheetham Hill Car Park each attended by over 1,000 people
* Organising the Annual Community Quiz and Organising a new Community Variety Show with over 180 people packing the hall at Bury Shul and 14 wonderfully talented acts
* Organising a Community Safety Day, in partnership with Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service
* Ensuring representation on Standing Advisory Committees for Religious Education across Greater Manchester
* Organising the Jewish Living Experience with the Board of Deputies at Manchester Cathedral with hundreds of school children attending plus many others
* Supporting the development of St Anne’s new Jewish Social and Cultural Affairs Programme
* Helping local authorities organise Holocaust Memorial Day events for their communities
* Working with the Second Generation Group to organise the community’s annual Yom HaShoah commemorations, which over 1,000 Jewish people and dozens of civic dignitaries attend
* Working with Faith Network 4 Manchester to deliver dozens of sessions in mainstream schools and colleges to educate pupils about Judaism
* Organising festive season Transport with over 20 volunteers helping transport 250 people to seasonal events in North and South Manchester
* Successfully challenging NHS Bury CCG’s attempt to close the Prestwich Walk-in Centre, including organising a community event with the CCG Chair
* Organising community input into Greater Manchester’s Commission on Preventing Hateful Extremism and Promoting Social Cohesion
* Initiating #YouthStandTogether leading to a meeting of 75 youth workers to advance cohesion initiatives
* Convening the Manchester Jewish Care Forum and, latterly, working with our Local Authorities and Health Services Clinical Commissioning Groups to address strategic issues for our community
* Defending religious slaughter against an attack by Lancashire County Council, working with Lancashire Council of Mosques
* Invest in Peace – bringing together 130 people to constructively discuss the Middle East issue in partnership with the Board of Deputies and Churches Together
* Ensuring Jewish representation at Remembrance Sunday events across the Region and organising a Jewish Magen David poppy appeal in conjunction with AJEX
* Advising the Greater Manchester Health & Social Care Trust on preventing a measles outbreak similar to that currently occurring in Stamford Hill
* Running social media and Israel advocacy training
* Running, with partners, the annual Community Sherman and Hamburger Lectures
* Producing the Annual Year Book, a key resource for community information
* Attending 100’s of events within the wider community to show that the Jewish Community is an active participant in the wider community
* Attending Faith leadership events on behalf of the community
* Attending several government project events with ministers
This, and more, is delivered with a budget of less than £30,000!
The Council is now delivering more activities than ever before and, as we head into our centenary in 2019, we continue to undertake these activities to ensure our community’s long term sustainability.
