The sentencing of Mohammed Bashir to life imprisonment marks the conclusion of another deeply disturbing terrorist case with links to Greater Manchester.

The fact that an individual living in North Manchester, close to the heart of our Jewish community, was being radicalised with the intention of targeting Jewish people is a stark reminder of the very real threat our community continues to face.

Today, the JRC has spoken to media outlets across the country about the significance of this case, the concerns of our community, and the ongoing impact of the Yom Kippur terrorist attack carried out by Jihad al-Shamie, which claimed two innocent lives and left many others with life-changing injuries.

We acknowledge Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson’s apology to the victims’ families and the Jewish community for the missed opportunities to apprehend al-Shamie before that horrific attack took place. His openness and willingness to confront these failings reflects the leadership that has underpinned the strong relationship between Greater Manchester Police and our community.
